Former US congressman Bob Barr on Monday announced plans to run for president on the Libertarian Party's ticket, in a move some analysts say could hurt Republican presumptive nominee John McCain.

"My name is Bob Barr and I'm a candidate for the presidency of the United States of America," said the former Republican lawmaker, who played a key role in the congressional impeachment of former president Bill Clinton.

Barr said he was running because there was not "currently or anywhere on the horizon" any candidate who understood the principles of fiscal conservatism and basic principles on which he said America was founded.

The former Georgia congressman, who announced his plans at a press conference here, must first win the Libertarian Party's nomination before throwing himself into the 2008 field for real.

If I remember correctly libertarians averaged ~400,000 votes in the last 2 elections. He has no chance…

Good for Barr. I wonder what other surprises will come up before November?

3. Jerry   May 12th, 2008 - 11:14 am

Judging by his performance in Congress, he won’t rest until every men’s room in the Washington, D.C. area is named for Ronald Reagan. His motto: “Think of the Gipper when you pull up your zipper.”

4. True Republican   May 12th, 2008 - 11:15 am

I am SO GLAD we finally have a real Republican in the race, and not a Democrat-in-disguise like McCain. I will be voting for Barr, and I hope my fellow conservatives see the light and vote for him too.

5. rck   May 12th, 2008 - 11:15 am

The Bob Barr I liked left politics years ago. This Bob Barr seems off the wall, resentful, and stand no chance of ever winnig the Presidency.

6. True Republican   May 12th, 2008 - 11:17 am

McCain is giving a speech today on the environment and selling out American business as he shows his true colors. Barr entered the race at the perfect time. Conservatives are going to flock to him because he represents the conservative cause.

“Conservatives are going to flock to him”
No, I wont. There aren’t as many nutjob extremists as you think…

With the betrayal of Ron Paul –after we spent millions of hours and dollars and he does not run third party — so many of us are soured.

Where do we turn? The Constitution angs by threads.

The Constitution Party — once our great hope, nominates a fellow who has been running for four years, but yet has a website designed by a 4th or 5th grader it appears to me.

When Ross ran; he shook up the dems and reps, so they removed the deficit. Years later; they put it back up.

Ron Paul should at least be his vice.

Go Barr; if not him go Cindy with the Green. With the coming $5 a gallon, and the coming war with Iran, and higher KIAs than we lost in either Nam or Korea — and another False Flag– Barr or Cindy could win.

I have moved to the harsh point of thinking the real terrorists of 2008 are those who vote for dems and reps.

The dems and reps don’t care; they are too corrupted by greed. Some greed is healthy, but they have destroyed the checks and balances which protected this country and her people.

9. True Republican   May 12th, 2008 - 11:23 am

A Barr/Paul ticket would be a dream. Maybe it will happen. Either way, Barr is going to get a big percentage of the conservative vote because he is the only true conservative running.

10. AMR   May 12th, 2008 - 11:24 am

The only group more foolish than Mr. Barr are those that would risk Collectivism by voting for this self-absorbed Curmudeon…

11. Chris   May 12th, 2008 - 11:25 am

Bob Barr’s candidacy will have as much effect on the 2008 election as a fart in the wind. He has almost no name recognition in America, and conservatives are not going to vote for him over McCain — especially if it means that Hillary or Obama would capture the nomination.

Besides, he sounds like a nut job now.

12. True Republican   May 12th, 2008 - 11:26 am

Barr is going to be very successful in the southern states. I am just happy he finally got into the race. We have a true conservative to vote for now. And not the Democrat-in-disguise McCain.

13. True Republican   May 12th, 2008 - 11:30 am

Chris, I think you’re wrong about Barr’s candidacy. There are many, many, MANY conservatives who are very unhappy with LIBERAL McCain. Barr provides an avenue for those of us who do not want a liberal in the White House. I believe Barr will do extremely well with the base, well enough even to capture the popular vote. If Barr performs well in the debates it will be a close race.

“I believe Barr will do extremely well with the base, well enough even to capture the popular vote.”
I believe you’re deluded… :D

15. Vince Hugh   May 12th, 2008 - 11:37 am

Bob Barr is not a kook like a Ron Paul or a Ralph Nader. But what is Barr thinking. The only people who lean to Libertarian ideas are Republicans…but they won’t go to the extreme that Barr will go to and will stick with the Republican Party.
Bob Barr is making a mistake in that he should wait until the next presidential election and run as a Republican and propound Libertarian ideals…but be smart enough to take out the wacko stuff (Paul’s views), and make it adaptable so that mainstream Republicans will filter it into their values. Anyone who tries to go against the Republican or Democratic parties will NEVER succeed. So you have to try and change the parties rather than trying to compete with them. You just get your issues destroyed by the big boys who have all the power and media influence..

16. Steve LaBianca   May 12th, 2008 - 11:38 am

To those of you who “are voting for Barr”, he has to get the Libertarian nomination first. That, folks will be no easy task. There are other very qualified Libertarians vying for this nomination. Barr has much baggage that even a Ron Paul supporter would have trouble supporting.

17. True Republican   May 12th, 2008 - 11:39 am

Vince — I disagree. Barr picked the perfect time to enter the race. Conservatives see through Democrat-in-disguise McCain. McCain gave a speech today on the environment that sold out American business in order to get him more votes (or so he thinks). Barr is a true conservative, and many of us are extremely happy he is finally in the race. He provides a true path to the White House for our ideas. This is the year.

Exactly, it’s just silly…like Ron “blame America” Paul supporters…

19. True Republican   May 12th, 2008 - 11:43 am

Patriot - You may not realize how much liberal McCain is disliked in the south. Your proximity to the west coast probably prevents you from seeing the scope of his problem in the south. Barr, who’s from the south, and who espouses traditional conservative ideals, will be extremely popular there. I am glad we finally have a true conservative in the race. I know many others are too.

20. Live Free or Die   May 12th, 2008 - 11:46 am

Thank God I have a candidate to cast my vote for in November. I’m so sick of lowering the bar. I think true conservatives will flock to Barr.

If Obama wins, the Republican party has nobody to blame but themselves.
