Shale In America's West Could Hold More Oil Than the Middle East

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, whose nation is the world's number one oil exporter, called on consumer countries to get used to high prices in comments published on Tuesday.

"Consumer countries have to adapt to the prices and the mechanisms of the market," the king said in an interview published by the Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassah.

"We have nothing to do with the current sharp increase in crude prices," he said reiterating the Saudi position that speculation, rising demand and the taxation of oil products in consumer countries were to blame.

"These countries must reduce their taxes on fuel.. if they want to contribute to easing the burden on ordinary consumers," he said.

3. Hillbilly   July 1st, 2008 - 6:45 am

We have got to stop buying oil from these idiots… I can’t wait for the day when either there oil runs out or oil isn’t worth anything anymore… then they can go back to goat herding in the desert!

4. Piker   July 1st, 2008 - 6:45 am

The King had one thing right, Lower the damn taxes.

5. Texas Guy   July 1st, 2008 - 6:45 am

Should we get use to high oil prices, the same way we got use to Saudi citizens attacking our country ?

6. eddie   July 1st, 2008 - 6:46 am

Perhaps we should simply begin drilling in the Gulf and ANWAR and simply tell the King to “adapt to” $65/ bbl crude prices…and dropping every time a cricket lifts another barrel in the US

7. Jim   July 1st, 2008 - 6:46 am

Yep, get used to it! Because until the normal people in this country pull their heads out and DEMAND access to our own resources, we are going to doing EXACTLY as we are told by the middle east. If we ever get to the point where sanity is allowed in Washington again, we will regain some control, but till then…get used to it.

Dear King Abdullah,

Fat chance.

9. harbinger1   July 1st, 2008 - 6:48 am

They’re so full of it, it’s comin out their ears!!!!

These Arabs are most definitely working in tandem with the Bush Administration & their PNAC buddies (who’re reaping obscene profits everyday from the ungodly prices)!!!

10. Steve   July 1st, 2008 - 6:48 am

I agree. Why does the US tax the fuel that it’s citizens need to run their lives? Some countries subsidize the fuel while others tax it. There is enough oil within the US to satisfy our needs for 60 years. If we were to drill more and build the refineries to process it, we would drive the economy so that innovation could lower the demand in the long run. All this talk about wind and solar is great, but it is not realistic to expect it any sooner than 30 years. If the economy continues to struggle in the interim due to fuel costs, the innovation to exploit these technologies will never take place.

11. Ken   July 1st, 2008 - 6:49 am

Our worthless democrat leaders (Pelosi, Reid, etc…) need to let us drill NOW and the gas tax needs to be cut NOW! The high proces have nothing to do with our current President, but it falls squarely on the shoulders of the no-good, do-nothing but complain democrat lead congress and senate.

12. Milton Friedman   July 1st, 2008 - 6:49 am

It’s a hard truth to hear. Granted, there is a devalued dollar and unregulated futures contracts speculation to consider, but how can you have a supply that remains constant with a growing demand from developing nations without a price increase? You can’t. That is why new resources have to be developed (off-shore) as we let free market capitalism innovate alternatives.

Vote out anyone who lies and says we can’t drill our way to lower prices. How else do you increase global supply Mr Reid??

13. adler   July 1st, 2008 - 6:50 am

If this doesn’t put the U.S. into an emergency mode to develop alternate energy sources, nothing will…and we’ll deserve the consequences!

14. kf   July 1st, 2008 - 6:50 am

Supply and demand folks. We have become a consumer nation. We import like crazy but we don’t produce much anymore. Guess what, that costs.

HD4lyf has got it. We need to put the dozen or so rabid environmentalists in a closet for a few days and drill for our own oil, increase the number of refineries to make that oil useable, and reduce the import requirements…

Oh yeah, and 3 out of 5 vehicles on the road being SUVs doesn’t really help things much does it. I don’t want to hear any whining from them please.

15. joe   July 1st, 2008 - 6:51 am

Why don’t we match grain prices to oil prices. The US produces the major world market share of wheat and corn. They make it costly to fuel our vehicles and heat our homes. Let’s make it costly to eat for them.

16. killerbee   July 1st, 2008 - 6:53 am

When did the “GHOUL” move to Saudi Arabia? What time is his show on and is it on satelite?

17. Martin   July 1st, 2008 - 6:53 am

When we find a cheap way to make hydrogen ,, This guy will need a barrel of water to wash down his foot.

18. FlamingLib   July 1st, 2008 - 6:54 am

Okay Drill here blah blah geniuses. I’ll make this question as simple as you are. Why would an oil company sell any oil to the U.S. for less than what it is going for in the rest of the global market?

19. James_Richmond   July 1st, 2008 - 6:54 am

There are only two responses we can make to this…get our own oil, or get on alternative energy. One will take much longer than the other, but both need to be pursued.

Domestic oil production is a proven resource and would result in the shortest route to relief and energy independence. Alternative energy is an excellent long term future goal and by all means money should be invested towards it. If we come up with a worthwhile solution sooner rather than later, we could always EXPORT EXCESS OIL to other countries and invest those monies toward in ourselves.

However, simply sitting and allowing our economy to crumble while chanting “oil and coal is making us sick” is the most foolish and irresponsible thing we can be doing.

Alternative energy will take DECADES to adopt…imagine replacing 100 million vehicles consisting of cars, suvs, and big rigs. It will be a HUGE investment that will require TONS of capital…not to mention the energy source itself will have to be tested and proven. We can’t afford such a momentous project when we’re SENDING ALL OF OUR MONEY OVERSEAS.

It is time to DRILL NOW. We need a REALISTIC approach to solving our energy dependence problems. The way Israel is positioning themselves with Iran, the middle east is likely to become increasingly unstable. Sitting and “promoting alternative energy” via the strangulation of our economy is unacceptable!

We the people should be able to influence our policies, right? Our representatives need to know their placing of politics above the interest of the people at large will result in the end of their careers! 20. Outta Gas   July 1st, 2008 - 6:54 am

Heh Heh… Didn’t anyone watch Larry King last night the CEO off Chevron said drill domestically won’t make a difference… Taxes need to be lowered (we pay 60 cents a gallon here in CT. they just had to have a special session to delay a further increase int he gas tax). The people in Saudi Arabia practically get there gas 4 free. Everyone needs to cease driving, stop going to work, and just revolt… This country has no spine anymore, all people do is complain.. What do you think the patriots that took part in the Boston Tea Party would do if they were here today???? People just don’t care the rich get richer the poor and middle class get poorer… We’ve got two very poor choices for President…. You’ve got to educate yourself s, and get angry, where is the unity and fight that our founders had that made this country so great???? How much are they paying in China for gas????
